Several Issues on Adolescent Psychotherapy
Shin Suk-Ho

Abstract
Patients in adolescence address issues of separation-individuation, autonomy, and oedipal struggles. The emphasis of this paper is on separation-individuation issues in adolescence. The second individuation process represents the adolescent task of achieving independence from internalized objects and their formative influence on the ego and superego. Adolescents in psychoanalytic psychotherapy demonstrate two fundamental processes--the psychotherapeutic process and the developmental process. Technical approaches that effectively coordinate these processes need to be conceptualized in order to treat adolescents. In addition, psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adolescents aims at enhancing the mentalizing capacity to lead to more effective and more specifically tailored therapeutic approaches.
